This short story was created for the TDU Bitsy Game Jam, 2021.

It explores the temporality of friendship. It is not meant to be sad, merely a reflection of my experience of various friendships.

Don't forget when you're a kid - you exist to make friends to play with. When you you grow from all the playing, you make friends to validate your interests. When you're older than that, you make friends to imitate and socially climb. Keep cycling through these reasons and you'll wind up with friends too tired to play, with different interests, less than desirable outcomes, and stagnation. Seems like a bad deal to keep 'em around, right? Especially since you can always make new friends who better fit these needs.

Friendships based on proximity, cultural memories, mutual fears or mutual goals will never dig as deep as the friendships that know the person warts and all and a commitment to make time to check-in, to show up, to be transparent about pain and irritation - the deep thoughts - to keep promises even when it's no longer beneficial. Not everyone is ready to be a friend like that.

All that to say, if you have even one, stick with them.
